Stripped of Jobs, Stripped of Dignity: WBSSC Teachers Plan Bare Protest March to Nabanna

Stripped of Jobs, Stripped of Dignity: WBSSC Teachers Plan Bare Protest March to Nabanna

Kolkata, May 30, 2025 – In a dramatic escalation of their ongoing protest, thousands of teachers rendered jobless by the recent Supreme Court order annulling WBSSC (West Bengal School Service Commission) appointments announced plans for a highly symbolic “March to State Secretariat” today. Their unique form of protest? Walking partially unclothed to represent the “stripping” of their livelihoods and dignity by the evolving situation.

WBSSC News Today: March Plans and Symbolic Action

According to WBSSC news today, the protesting educators, who identify themselves as the “untainted” or “genuine” teachers cleared legitimately in the original recruitment process, will assemble at Sealdah starting 11 AM. From there, they will march towards Nabanna, the state Secretariat complex in Howrah, adjacent to Kolkata. The defining feature of this rally will be participants keeping specific portions of their bodies bare. This stark visual protest is intended to symbolize how the fallout from the recruitment scam and subsequent court orders has left them exposed and vulnerable.

“The evolving situation has stripped the ‘untainted’ teachers. That’s why we have decided on this symbolic action during our rally,” explained Chinmay Mondal, convener of the Jogyo Shikshak-Shikshika Adhikar Mancha (Genuine Teachers’ Rights Forum). This umbrella body has been spearheading protests since last month’s landmark court decision.

The Crux of the WBSSC Crisis: Jobs Lost, Hope in Limbo

The protest stems directly from the April 3rd Supreme Court ruling. The court upheld a Calcutta High Court order that invalidated a staggering 25,753 teaching and non-teaching appointments made through the WBSSC. The court found these appointments tainted by a massive cash-for-jobs scam. Crucially, while targeting fraudulent appointments, the order swept away the jobs of individuals like the protesting teachers, who insist they cleared the process fairly and had no involvement in the scam.

Adding urgency to today’s march is a critical deadline. The Supreme Court mandated the West Bengal government initiate a fresh recruitment process for these 25,753+ vacant positions by May 31st. Complying with this, the WBSSC is scheduled to issue the notification for this massive fresh recruitment drive today itself, May 30th.

WBSSC News: CM’s Stance Fuels Protesters’ Anger

WBSSC news this week included a significant announcement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. While confirming the May 30th notification date, she delivered a blow to the protesting “untainted” teachers. Banerjee stated unequivocally that even these teachers, who lost their jobs through no proven fault of their own, would have to re-apply and undergo the written examination again in the fresh recruitment process. They would not be reinstated automatically.

This stance has ignited fury among the protesting group. They argue that subjecting them to a fresh exam, after they were originally selected through the commission’s process and served in schools for years, is profoundly unjust. They feel doubly victimized – first by the actions of corrupt individuals that voided their appointments, and now by a system seemingly unwilling to recognize their legitimate claim. Their protest today is a desperate plea for the government to acknowledge their plight and find a solution that differentiates them from the scam beneficiaries.

A Stark Walk for Justice

As the WBSSC notification for fresh recruitment lands today, the scene at Nabanna is set to be charged. The image of educators, stripped of their jobs and now resorting to a partial physical stripping as symbolism, marching towards the seat of state power, presents a powerful and unsettling picture of the human cost of the WBSSC recruitment scandal. Their demand is clear: justice and recognition for the “genuine” teachers caught in the crossfire. The state government’s response to this highly visible protest, unfolding alongside the launch of a new recruitment cycle, will be closely watched across West Bengal.
