BJP MP Ram Chander Jhangra Stirs Controversy with Pahalgam Remarks, Issues Apology Amid Backlash

Haryana BJP MP Ram Chander Jhangra found himself embroiled in a political firestorm this week after his comments on the recent Pahalgam terror attack drew sharp criticism from opposition parties, accusing him of insensitivity toward women. The MP later walked back his statements, claiming they were “misrepresented,” and expressed regret for any distress caused.

The controversy erupted during an event honoring the 300th birth anniversary of revered Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Jhangra, while addressing the gathering, suggested that women who lost their husbands in the April 22 terrorist ambush in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam should have embodied the courage of historical “veerangnas” (warrior women) like Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and fought back against the attackers. His remarks quickly ignited outrage, with the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Samajwadi Party (SP) condemning the BJP for what they termed “anti-women” rhetoric.

Clarification and Apology

Facing mounting pressure, Jhangra released a video statement clarifying his position. He emphasized that his words were intended to highlight the resilience of Indian women, not to undermine their grief. “I have immense respect for the strength of our sisters and mothers. My intention was never to insult the brave families who suffered unimaginable loss,” he said, adding that his reference to historical icons like Ahilyabai Holkar aimed to inspire courage in the face of adversity.

The MP further stated, “If my comments caused pain, I sincerely apologize. Our armed forces have already avenged this attack, delivering a resounding response to terrorism. We must now stand united with the affected families.” He also criticized opposition leaders for politicizing the issue, urging them to exercise “sadbuddhi” (wisdom) and prioritize national unity over divisive rhetoric.

Opposition Slams BJP’s “Insensitive” Narrative
The Congress, TMC, and SP lambasted Jhangra’s initial remarks as reflective of the BJP’s “callous attitude” toward women’s dignity. Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi stated, “To suggest grieving widows should have physically confronted terrorists is not just insensitive—it’s a grotesque distortion of bravery.” TMC leader Mahua Moitra echoed the sentiment, accusing the BJP of “habitually undermining women’s trauma to push patriarchal narratives.”

BJP Distances Itself, Calls for Closure
Amid the backlash, senior BJP leader and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar acknowledged the MP’s comments as “inappropriate” but urged the public to accept Jhangra’s apology. “Such statements are unacceptable. However, he has expressed regret, and it’s time to move forward in solidarity with the victims’ families,” Khattar said.

The Pahalgam attack, which targeted a group of tourists, claimed seven lives, including two women, and left several injured. Security forces later neutralized the terrorists responsible in a retaliatory operation.

Context and Fallout
The incident has reignited debates on political accountability and the framing of gender-based narratives during tragedies. While Jhangra’s supporters argue his remarks were taken out of context, critics stress the need for empathy over politicized notions of valor. As tensions simmer, the BJP faces renewed scrutiny over its messaging, particularly on issues affecting women and victims of violence.
